Managing Diversity and Inclusion at Work

Course Objectives 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Understand and explain the nature of diversity in the workplace, including the social, cultural, and individual dimensions that influence how people work together. 
  • Distinguish between workforce diversity and the working environment, and explain how both impact organisational effectiveness. 
  • Describe the strategic value of workplace diversity in enhancing creativity, productivity, customer service, global competitiveness, and talent attraction. 
  • Identify common challenges associated with workplace diversity, including stereotypes, unconscious bias, discrimination, and perception differences. 
  • Recognise how personal experiences, attitudes, and perceptions influence workplace behaviour and interactions. 
  • Apply practical strategies to reduce bias and discrimination in recruitment, assessment, and day-to-day management practices. 
  • Communicate effectively in diverse workplaces using inclusive, two-way communication and cross-cultural communication principles. 
  • Manage and lead diverse teams by identifying shared values, encouraging inclusive participation, and leveraging diverse viewpoints. 
  • Use structured techniques, such as inclusive meetings and brainstorming, to promote collaboration and innovation. 
  • Identify common sources of workplace conflict arising from diversity and apply constructive conflict-management approaches. 
  • Apply appropriate rules of engagement when managing disagreement and resolving interpersonal conflict. 

Audience

This is intended for managers in all economic sectors. These managers would typically be second level managers such as heads of department, section heads or divisional heads, who may have more than one team reporting to them.

Pre-Requisites

It is assumed that learners are competent in:

  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 4.
