This is an accredited presentation skills short course that aligns with Unit Standard 242840 at NQF Level 4 for 2 credits.

Formative and summative assessments are done in class. 

At the end of this 1-day workshop, you will be able to:

Verbal Communication 

  • Use vocal qualities (tone, pitch, pace, volume, pausing) to deliver a clear, engaging message. 
  • Speak clearly and confidently with correct pronunciation and minimal filler words. 
  • Maintain a natural, conversational delivery. 
  • Use microphones and vocal equipment correctly. 

Non-Verbal Communication 

  • Use effective body language (posture, gestures, facial expression, movement). 
  • Maintain purposeful eye contact to build connection and credibility. 
  • Use personal space appropriately across contexts and cultures. 
  • Control nervous habits to stay calm and focused. 

Poise, Presence & Professional Image 

  • Show composure and confidence appropriate to the setting. 
  • Practise delivery to build smooth, consistent performance. 
  • Use deliberate movements to convey conviction. 
  • Present a professional image through appropriate dress and grooming. 

Handling Questions & Objections 

  • Prepare for common objections and challenges. 
  • Use assertion skills to manage interruptions respectfully. 
  • Respond to questions clearly, politely, and concisely. 
  • Address resistance with calm reasoning and justification. 

Integrated Presentation Skills 

  • Plan and structure a clear presentation tailored to the audience.
  • Deliver a 3–5 minute presentation demonstrating all skills.
  • Confidently handle questions and objections during Q&A.

Audience

This course is ideal for any person needing to present to a client internally or externally.  

As this is a practical course, if the group size is larger than 10 people, 2 days will be required to complete all practical activities.  

Pre-Requisites

NQF level 3 literacy and communication skills are recommended to ensure full engagement with the course content and activities.

Some background experience in presenting can also be beneficial but not strictly required.

Course Outline / Curriculum

Module 1: Introduction to Effective Oral Presentations 

  • Overview of Unit Standard purpose and outcomes 
  • Communication basics: forms, processes, meaning 
  • Planning skills: core message, structure, strong openings 
  • Understanding the audience: background, needs, expectations, diversity, size, context 
  • How audience insight influences content, tone, visuals, and delivery 

 

Module 2: Using Verbal Communication Effectively (SO1) 

  • Voice skills: modulation, pitch, volume, pausing, rhythm 
  • Clarity and articulation: confident pronunciation, avoiding filler words 
  • Natural, conversational delivery (not memorised or mechanical) 
  • Verbal rapport-building techniques 
  • Proper use of microphones and sound equipment 

 

Module 3: Using Non-Verbal Communication (SO2) 

  • Effective body language: posture, gestures, facial expression 
  • Using eye contact to show interest and credibility 
  • Managing personal space (individual, group, cultural differences) 
  • Recognising and controlling nervous habits (fidgeting, pacing, tics) 

 

Module 4: Poise, Presence & Professional Image (SO3) 

  • Maintaining composure appropriate to the occasion 
  • Practising delivery to build confident memory patterns 
  • Bold, deliberate movements to show conviction 
  • Projecting a professional image through dress and grooming 

 

Module 5: Handling Questions & Objections (SO4) 

  • Anticipating and preparing for possible objections 
  • Responding effectively: restating, clarifying, justifying 
  • Managing difficult or dominant audience members (assertion skills) 
  • Keeping answers clear, concise, respectful, and audience-focused 
  • Using a positive, polite conversational style to build goodwill 

 

Modules 6 & 7: Integrated Practice & Summative Assessment 

  • Preparing a short presentation that integrates all skills 
  • Delivering a 3–5 minute presentation 
  • Demonstrating verbal, non-verbal, poise, rapport, and Q&A competencies
