Change Management Essentials for Managers equips managers with practical tools to plan, implement, and sustain change in real workplace environments. The course covers the drivers of change, proven change management models, effective planning, and strategies for managing resistance, ensuring change initiatives deliver lasting results. By understanding both the human and operational sides of change, participants gain the confidence to lead transitions that improve performance, reduce disruption, and build organisational resilience.

The Accredited Change Management Course is a two-day workshop aligned to SAQA US252021 - Formulate recommendations for a change process. This course is set at NQF level 5 and is worth 8 credits.

It is part of the National Certificate: Generic Management, which is a qualification worth 162 credits on NQF Level 5.  This qualification expired on 30th June 2026. One needs to be enrolled on this programme before then to allow one to complete all courses and assessments by June 2028.

The course covers theory and best practice in Change Management. It is aligned to follow the specific outcomes of unit standard 252021 which are:

  • Develop structured change plans with clear goals, roles, and timelines 
  • Manage resistance to change using appropriate strategies 
  • Describe the roles, responsibilities, and competencies of effective change agents

Learners who apply can send in copies of their matric certificate to prove that they meet the requirements. If they do not have matric, an assessment can be done to see if they meet the requirements.

1. Concept and Nature of Change 

  • Definition of organisational change and its impact on systems, processes, and service delivery 
  • Change management as a proactive and structured approach at individual and organisational levels 
  • Phases of the change management process: 
    • Preparing for change 
    • Managing and implementing change 
    • Reinforcing and sustaining change 
  • Internal and external sources of organisational change, including strategic, technological, people, and environmental factors 

 

2. Impact and Sustainability of Change 

  • Positive impacts such as innovation, efficiency, skills development, and growth opportunities 
  • Potential risks, including poor cost–benefit outcomes and misdiagnosed problems 
  • Factors influencing sustainable change and common reasons why change initiatives fail 
  • Importance of long-term adoption and workforce acceptance 

 

3. Determining the Need for Change 

  • Conducting needs analysis to identify required improvements or innovations 
  • Aligning operations with organisational mission, goals, and current trends 
  • Using employee input and management consultation to inform change decisions 
  • Applying SWOT analysis to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats 

 

4. Models for Implementing Change 

  • Overview of key change management models: 
    • Lewin’s Unfreeze–Change–Refreeze model 
    • ADKAR model focusing on individual change readiness 
    • Kotter’s 8-Step change implementation model 
  • Comparing models to suit different organisational contexts 

 

5. Implementing the Change Process 

  • Planning change initiatives using SMART targets and clear timelines 
  • Developing a structured change plan with defined roles and resources 
  • Identifying and managing resistance to change through communication, participation, and negotiation

  • Supporting functions such as catalyst, process facilitator, and stabiliser
