It is aligned to meet the outcomes of US 252027 - Devise and Apply Strategies to Establish and Maintain Workplace Relationships. It is topic 3 of Module 1 of the Generic Management Qualification SAQA ID 59201 LP 60269, worth 162 Credits at NQF Level 5.

The objectives for this course are:

  • Explain the importance of effective interpersonal relationships and networking in the workplace 
  • Apply interpersonal and networking skills to build and maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders 
  • Establish and maintain constructive working relationships with managers through clear communication, feedback, and consultation 
  • Seek guidance and raise quality or performance concerns with managers in a professional and appropriate manner 
  • Identify the causes and phases of workplace conflict and recognise early warning signs of conflict 
  • Assess their own conflict management style and apply appropriate strategies to manage and minimise conflict within a unit 
  • Refer conflicts to appropriate authorities or managers in line with organisational procedures 
  • Build and maintain effective teams by promoting open communication, trust, and collaboration

This course will suit learners in any business unit who are responsible for leading and managing staff.  It would also suit any qualifying learner who would like to earn credits towards a qualification. 

Pre-Requisites

Any learner embarking on this course is assumed to be competent in:

 

  • Communication at NQF Level 4

  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4

  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 4

Evidence of this is required upon enrollment or opportunities for RPL are available for a learner to demonstrate competence.

Lesson 1: Building Professional Relationships and Networks

  • Qualities of healthy workplace relationships 
  • The importance of networking in the workplace 
  • Identifying internal and external networking opportunities 
  • Practical strategies and tips for effective networking

 Lesson 2: Managing Relationships with Managers 

  • Understanding the employee–manager relationship 
  • Keeping managers informed through clear communication 
  • Seeking guidance and information appropriately 
  • Consulting managers when executing tasks and decisions 
  • Raising quality or performance concerns constructively 

Outcome focus: Build constructive, professional relationships with managers based on trust, communication, and accountability. 

 

Lesson 3: Managing Conflict in the Workplace 

  • Understanding the causes and phases of workplace conflict 
  • Identifying personal conflict styles and triggers 
  • Applying appropriate conflict management strategies 
  • Minimising the impact of conflict within a unit 
  • Referring conflicts to appropriate authorities or managers when required
